Is Apple finally ready to make the switch? Its possible, but not very likely. The talk of this merger is probably only to scare AT&T into making a better deal. They are supposed to renew/expand their contract with Apple soon and it is a good strategy by Apple to talk to AT&T biggest threat. If Apple did make the switch, I know I would be getting an iPhone. I don't know the exact numbers but I know that Verizon has much better nation wide coverage over AT&T here in the states so there is at least that information to add to the validity of this being a real deal. If Apple does make the switch then the iPhone will be operating on multiple radio bands, but who cares? Apple would more than double their number of iPhone customers if they do follow through with the Verizon deal.
